About anti-wrinkle treaments
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring substance commonly used in aesthetic procedures to inhibit muscle activity in response to nerve impulses. When you frown, the underlying facial muscles contract, leading to forehead lines. Injecting small amounts of Botulinum toxin into these muscles renders them inactive, smoothing the skin as a result. The effects aren’t immediate and may take several days to fully manifest. While the results are temporary, you can expect them to last between 3 to 6 months, with muscle movement gradually returning after about 6 weeks post-treatment.
What to Expect:
During the procedure: Firstly, your practitioner will remove any makeup, they will then mark out the areas to be treated and prepare the dosage required. This will have been agreed at your consultation. The procedure uses a very fine needle to reduce discomfort and in many cases is virtually pain-free.
Immediately after the procedure: You will probably see some small bumps where the botulinum toxin was injected, and perhaps some slight bruising. The bumps will subside in 20 to 30 minutes but it’s important NOT to massage these as it can cause the neurotoxin to spread into adjacent muscles. Before you leave the clinic, your practitioner will arrange your 2-week review.
The days after the procedure: There is virtually no downtime associated with anti-wrinkle treatments. Some clients report headaches and occasionally flu-like symptoms, but these are nothing to worry about and can be treated with proprietary painkillers.
This client was treated for her lateral canthal lines, or Crow’s Feet, the fine lines, and wrinkles that develop at the outer edge of the eye, as the skin loses its elasticity. The outer muscles around the eye (orbicularis oris) have been isolated using Botulinum toxin. This is classed as one area of treatment.
Treatments should be scheduled no less than 12 weeks apart; otherwise, you are at risk of building resistance to the botulinum toxin. As this is a prescription-only medication, it cannot be prescribed within these limits. Once botulinum toxin wears off, your muscles will function as they did before treatment, this means the wrinkles that you had smoothed, will slowly begin to appear again.
